The most technical room in the house

A bathroom looks simple, but it is the room where the most trades meet in the fewest square metres: demolition, drainage, plumbing, electrics, masonry, tiling and carpentry. The order and the interplay are decisive — which is why a bathroom is rarely the place to cut corners on the craft. Mistakes here show up as moisture, and moisture shows up expensive.

Waterproofing is the foundation

The most important thing in a bathroom is what you cannot see. The waterproof membrane behind the tiles keeps water out of the structure, and it has to be executed to current standards, with the correct falls towards the drain. Done properly, the room lasts for decades. Done poorly, it is only a matter of time before the damage appears behind the wall.

Planning and layout

Before demolition begins, we fix the room: the position of the drain, the shower area, the recesses and the lighting. If water and the soil stack are to be moved, now is the time to decide. A well-considered layout is not only about aesthetics — it is about the room working in everyday life and being easy to keep clean.

The sequence in a bathroom

Broadly: demolition, drainage and plumbing runs, building up the floor with falls, membrane, tiling, fitting the sanitary ware and fixtures, and finally the finish and the joints. Each step has to be dry and checked before the next begins. It is that patience which separates a bathroom that lasts from one that disappoints.

Materials that last

We choose materials that can take a life of water and steam — and that age well. Tiles, joints, fixtures and ventilation have to work together so the room is both watertight and healthy to be in. Good ventilation is every bit as important as a good membrane.

One contract, one responsibility

Because so many trades meet here, the bathroom is an obvious place to hold the responsibility in one set of hands. With us as your main contractor, we coordinate every trade, hold the timeline, and stand behind the whole — including what lies hidden behind the tiles.
